In this section of the 2017 Trade Deadline the following are deals made that will impact how things shake out in October. The first big blockbuster trade that took place in July was between the Chicago Cubs and White Sox.

The Deal

Chicago Cubs Get: Jose Quintana
Chicago White Sox Get: OF Eloy Jimenez, RHP Dylan Cease, 2B Bryant Flete, and 1B Matt Rose

The Impact

This trade immediately upgrades the Chicago Cubs rotation because they receive Jose Quintana, a lefty who pitches over 200 innings annually. The Cubs also gets a lefty starting pitcher to potentially go against the Los Angeles Dodgers, hitting .259 against left handers, and the big left handed bats in the Washington Nationals lineup. Finally, the Cubs get a player in Quintana that is in the midst of an affordable five-year contract and he will not be a free agent until 2021. For the White Sox, the rebuild continues. The bar was set during the winter when they dealt Chris Sale to the Boston Red Sox. The Cubs had the prospects needed to pull off this blockbuster of a trade with their in-state rivals. First, the Cubs gave up two of their top ten prospects in outfielder Eloy Jimenez and right-handed pitcher Dylan Cease. The additions of 2B Bryant Flete, and 1B Matt Rose just deepens a very deep and talented farm system.

Winner

This is one of the best deals that benefits both teams. The White Sox stockpile prospects and the Cubs get one of the games better left-handed starters. I give the nod to the Cubs strictly because if Jake Arrieta bolts for greener pastures this offseason, the Cubs protected themselves against that move. However, if all of the prospects pan out the White Sox may be a force to deal with for a very long time.
